Westerhout 5 (also known as the Soul Nebula, IC 1848) is a large H II emission nebula and star-forming region in Cassiopeia, located about 6,500–7,000 light‑years from Earth. It spans roughly 100 light‑years and contains cavities, pillars, and evaporating gaseous globules sculpted by the radiation and winds of massive young stars.
